Formatting and styles
Font, paragraph, lists, tabs, borders and drop caps in Documenta; the eleven paragraph styles, character styles and copying a style.
Paragraph styles
Documenta has eleven paragraph styles: Title, Subtitle, Heading 1 to Heading 6, Body, Quote and Caption. The first nine have a shortcut, from ⌥ ⌘ 1 (Title) to ⌥ ⌘ 9 (Body).
A style’s look can be changed for each document:
- Format › Paragraph Style › Modify Style…: font, size, bold, italic, color and spacing before and after. The new look applies to this document and to the paragraphs that already have the style.
- Update Style from Selection: the style takes the look of the paragraph the cursor is in.
When a style changes, paragraphs only change where they matched the old style: a word in italics stays in italics.
Character styles
Format › Character Style: Emphasis, Strong, Code and Short Quote, or No Character Style. They are kept in Word and ODT files.
Font
From the Format › Font menu and the Font section of the inspector:
- Bold (⌘ B), Italic (⌘ I), Underline (⌘ U), Strikethrough and Double Strikethrough.
- Single, double, thick, dotted, dashed or wavy underline, with its own color.
- Small Caps and All Caps: the text stays as typed and is shown in capitals. Change Case instead really changes the text (UPPERCASE, lowercase, Title Case, Sentence case).
- Superscript (⌃ ⌘ =) and Subscript (⌃ ⌘ -), Bigger (⌘ +) and Smaller (⌘ -).
- Text color, highlight, letter spacing, Effects (letter outline and shadow).
- Copy Style (⌥ ⌘ C) and Paste Style (⌥ ⌘ V) carry font and paragraph formatting from one place to another; Clear Formatting brings the text back to its paragraph style.
Paragraph
- Alignment: left (⌘ {), centered (⌘ |), right (⌘ }) or justified.
- Indents: ⌘ ] and ⌘ [, or the values in the inspector and on the ruler.
- Line Spacing single, 1.15, 1.5 or double; spacing before and after the paragraph.
- Move Paragraph Up and Down (⌃ ⇧ ↑ / ↓) and Sort Paragraphs A to Z or Z to A.
- Tabs: left, center, right or decimal, with a dots, dashes or line leader. With no tab stops set, there is one every 1.27 cm. You can also drag them on the ruler.
- Borders and Background: ready-made boxes, a solid, double, dashed or dotted line for each side, color and shading. Consecutive paragraphs with the same box share a single box.
- Drop Cap: how many lines and characters, in the text or in the margin, and the distance from the text.
Lists
Bulleted List (⇧ ⌘ 8) and Numbered List (⇧ ⌘ 7); the inspector also has letters and Roman numerals, upper or lower case, the bullet symbol, the starting number and hierarchical numbering like 1.1. At the start of an item, Tab and ⇧ Tab move it one level.
Language of the text
Format › Language gives part of the text a language: spell checking uses that language’s dictionary. Use for Whole Document applies it to all the text; the no-proofing option is for code, names and quotations. The language is kept in Word and ODT files.
