Shortcuts, Learning & Reference
Beginner and Expert modes, 21-chapter networking guide, interactive glossary, macOS keyboard shortcuts, and Siri/Spotlight App Intents in NetCalc Pro.
Integrated Learning & Active Reference
NetCalc Pro is designed not only as a rapid calculator for experienced engineers, but as a comprehensive study companion for students preparing for academic courses or certifications like Cisco CCNA (200-301).
Beginner Mode vs Expert Mode
In application preferences (or via the quick switcher), you can tailor the interface density to your current skill level:
1. Beginner Mode
- Contextual Explanations: every calculation and planning screen features inline educational cards explaining what each value means (why the first address is the network ID, what wildcard masks do, why VLSM blocks must be sorted largest-first).
- Step-by-Step Guidance: input fields are pre-populated with standard educational defaults and accompanied by descriptive labels.
- Direct Glossary Access: inline hyperlinks navigate directly to definitions within the built-in glossary.
2. Expert Mode
- High-Density Information: removes introductory explanatory cards to maximize workspace area for tables, address space maps, and CLI blocks.
- Fast-Paced Workflow: immediate one-click copy actions and streamlined interface drawers.
21-Chapter Integrated Networking Guide
NetCalc Pro includes an offline textbook covering the networking curriculum from fundamentals to advanced routing (accessible via ⌘ ? on macOS or via the Help menu):

| 13 | Routing Algorithms: architecture of Distance Vector vs Link State protocols. |
| 14 | Dynamic Routing: single-area OSPF, RIPv2, and EIGRP configuration. |
| 15 | VLANs & Trunking: layer 2 segmentation, IEEE 802.1Q encapsulation, and Inter-VLAN routing. |
| 16 | Network Services: local DHCP server pools, relay agents, and DNS resolution. |
| 17 | Perimeter Security: Access Control Lists (ACLs), DMZ architectures, NAT, and PAT overload. |
| 18 | IPv6: 128-bit structure, RFC 5952 compression, /64 subnets, and EUI-64 autoconfiguration. |

Integrated Network Glossary
Accessible at any time from Help → Network Glossary, the app provides definitions for over 40 core concepts:
- Core Addressing: IP Address, CIDR, Subnet Mask, Wildcard Mask, Network Address, Broadcast Address, Usable Hosts.
- Routing & Switching: Default Gateway, Administrative Distance, Metric, Next Hop, 802.1Q Trunk, Sub-interface, SVI.
- Protocols & Services: OSPF Area, Passive Interface, DHCP Pool, Excluded Addresses, Standard/Extended ACL, PAT Overload, EUI-64.
macOS Keyboard Shortcuts
NetCalc Pro is a fully keyboard-navigable macOS desktop application:
| Shortcut | Menu | Action |
|---|---|---|
| ⌘ N | File | Create a new lab project |
| ⇧ ⌘ D | File | Add a new device (router/switch) to the current project |
| ⌥ ⌘ C | Window | Open the IP Calculator in an independent separate window |
| ⌥ ⌘ I | View | Toggle the contextual detail inspector |
| ⇧ ⌘ C | Cisco | Copy the Cisco CLI configuration of the selected device |
| ⌘ ? | Help | Open the 21-Chapter Networking Guide |
| ⌘ , | NetCalc Pro | Open Settings (General & iCloud Sync) |
| ⌘ Z | Edit | Undo the last change (projects, devices, interfaces, routes) |
| ⇧ ⌘ Z | Edit | Redo the last undone operation |
[!TIP] The shortcut ⌥ ⌘ C opens the calculator in its own standalone window, allowing you to position it side-by-side with Cisco Packet Tracer or lab notes.
Siri, Spotlight & Shortcuts (App Intents)
NetCalc Pro integrates Apple’s App Intents framework, allowing you to perform calculations directly from Spotlight or via Siri voice commands without opening the main app window:
1. Calculate a Subnet
- Invocation phrases: “Calculate a subnet with NetCalc Pro”, “Subnet with NetCalc Pro”
- Inputs: IP address and CIDR prefix (e.g.,
10.0.0.1/22). - Response: Calculated network address, subnet mask, broadcast, usable host capacity, and valid assignable host range.
2. Find Prefix for N Hosts
- Invocation phrases: “Find prefix with NetCalc Pro”, “Which prefix do I need with NetCalc Pro”
- Inputs: Required number of host devices (e.g.,
75). - Response: Tightest CIDR prefix (e.g.,
/25), dotted decimal mask, and total capacity.
3. Convert Subnet Mask
- Invocation phrases: “Convert a subnet mask with NetCalc Pro”
- Inputs: Dotted decimal mask (e.g.,
255.255.248.0) or CIDR integer (e.g.,21). - Response: Bidirectional conversion between decimal and CIDR, including the inverted Cisco wildcard mask.
